The Skin Struggle…

My skin has gone through some major changes within the last two years for the worse. I developed adult acne I believe and with acne comes hyperpigmentation. I’m currently taking my skin care more seriously and plan on going to see a dermatologist but in the meantime there has been lots of talk about sunscreen. I always thought as a black girl we didn’t need sunscreen but that couldn’t be furthest from the truth. Yes it is true from my research that we have a natural sunscreen built into our melanin (don’t quote me) but it’s not enough to protect from the harsh rays of the sun. I went to an esthetician and she confirmed that I should always be wearing a spf not only in the summer but all seasons. SPF is not only on the beach. To prevent my skin from drying out and make my hyperpigmentation worse that I am trying to correct, it is imperative that I protect my skin.

I asked my Instagram community for their suggestions on sunscreens as well as shared the top two in my rotation. I’m obsessed with the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 as it goes on clear and doesn’t interfere with my makeup if I choose to wear makeup over it. The main issue a lot of black people have with sunscreen is the white cast that it leaves and in my personal opinion I despise that beachy smell. Another great contender is Lancome UV Expert Defense SPF 50+ Primer & Moisturizer, It smells really clean and can double as a primer and moisturizer. Sometimes I’ll just wear this and skip the moisturizer before applying makeup. Best of all it also doesn’t leave that white cast. This is a little more pricey than the Supergoop but worth the price. Other options are Paula’s Choice CLEAR Ultra-Light Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 30 | Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare All-Physical Dark Spot Sun Defense Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 | Black Girl Sunscreen Broad Spectrum Spf 30. Be sure to wear your sunscreen!
